Treatment options after repeated relapse
Russian professor Vladimir Borzenkov suffers from high-risk multiple myeloma. He has received multiple lines of drug treatment and two autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplants, but the disease still relapses. A Russian hematologist introduced him to CAR-T; a Chinese student’s suggestion allowed him to learn more about the treatment resources in Chinese hospitals.
Communicate about the condition before coming to China
Dr. Li Hua from Jiahui Hematology Department communicates remotely with the patient and evaluates subsequent treatment based on the information provided by Russian doctors. The first step in cross-border medical treatment is to sort out past treatment history, clarify the disease status, and then confirm whether the patient is eligible for further treatment.
Cell collection, reinfusion and observation
In December 2023, the patient completed cell collection; in January 2024, he received CAR-T infusion. Grade 1 cytokine release syndrome occurred on day 4 after reinfusion, and was treated and observed by the medical team. He was discharged from the hospital approximately 13 days after the reinfusion and later returned to Russia for follow-up.
Results at time of reporting
Wen Wei Po reported in May 2024 that the patient achieved complete remission at the latest follow-up at that time. This is an evaluation of efficacy at a specific time point, and the disease status still needs to be reviewed later. This case presents the complete path of cooperation between overseas attending doctors and the Shanghai team, and return to the home country for follow-up after treatment.
